1,326 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: The Invasion
Location: Earth, Angel Grove
Timeline: 2300 Hours November 16th 2050

Sitting in the ruins of some formerly grandiose building, the muscular Kaldor General known only as Kayge stared down at the long curved blade in his hand. His other fist slid down the flat edge, smoothing off any imperfections that might have remained there. A weapon given to him by the Emperor himself, it had slain many over his years of service. And it had never failed him.

He paused only a moment as he sensed someone else approaching him. It could be only one person; the grunts would never dare disturb his peace. But his face didn't flinch or change. Instead, he welcomed her with his deep, gravelly tone.

"I have fought in many wars in our Emperor's name. It is a pity this one was over so quickly. Wouldn't you agree, Lunandria?"

Lunandria grinned as her attempts to sneak up on his failed like usual. It had never worked in the last twenty years they had worked together for the Emperor so she never knew why they played the cat and mouse game. “They were not expecting it just like we were not expecting an Orange Ranger. Humans are not foolish. They will be working a rebellion, there will be rangers still here on this planet. This is a rest.” She answered appearing under one of the pillars that used to connect to a ceiling.

"Rest." He almost snorted. "A true General of Kaldor doesn't rest unless his Emperor bids it. And I haven't run out of worthy adversaries yet. Ranger or not." He slid the blade smoothly into the sheath that hung across his back and turned to her. "You're the one who finds all of this 'fun' after all."

“The toll on both nature and humanity is tremendous. It'll likely take years before this town will have recovered, you will find no one worthy” She said aloud thinking on her thoughts that she had shared with Markus. Luna frowned as he accused her of enjoying it and of not being a true general. “You accuse me so often of nothing a true general yet I was the one who injured the orange ranger. Of course, I do. I have to find fun when you leave me so bored.” She challenged him.

"I was not doubting you, my love," he noted, touching her chin with a gloved hand. All of these years together, the blood they had shed side-by-side in their Emperor's name. He was glad for it to have been her. "Nor would I wish such boredom on you. Perhaps a challenge? Which one of us will be the first to bring our Emperor the head of one of the Power Rangers?" His lips curled into the faintest of grins at the prospect. Competing with her always brought out so much of their shared passion.

“You know we cannot kill them. Only injure. The emperor wants to do it all himself for the crystals so your challenge is useless.” She spat at him. Luna narrowed her eyes as her eyes flashed purple and her staff with the broken tip appeared in her hands still covered in the Orange Rangers blood. She nearly swiped the feet out from underneath him but chose to poke him with the staff.

He let her prod, the smirk still on his face. That menacing staff always brought him such pleasure to see on the battlefield.

"You have another suggestion?" he offered, leaning in closer to her face so he could gaze into those deep purple irises.

Luna poked him ahead watching with interest as the crystal staffs broken tip sparked as it touched him as if wanting to prove a point.

“I have no suggestion right now. I have been battling all day I am tired.” She admitted as the staff disappeared with a final poke. Her weapons were magical whilst his existed in this realm at all times. “What is this place you have been hiding in?”

"I didn't care to wonder," he replied, nudging a fallen stool with his boot to reveal a fallen piece of signage. 'Angel Grove Juice Bar' was barely visible between cracks and dirt. "Nowhere of consequence, it would appear."

“There is nowhere to rest here.” She mused looking around interested at what the humans did for leisure time. She fought, read and hid away from everyone but the man that was stood there watching her.

Kayge moved around behind her, his hands resting on her shoulders. He applied firm pressure to the muscles there, his gravelly voice low as he whispered in her ear. "You seem particularly obssessed with that word. Has battle truly fatigued you so much?"

“Yes.” She admitted finally after taking a long moment to decide on whether she was or not. Kayge saw a side of her unlike others so it was easily to appear vulnerable for a moment before she stood up straighter despite the pressure he was applying. “I battled a Ranger unlike the rest of you all.” Was her explanation thinking on how close she had been to killing him when her staff had torn through his suit like it was just cloth. It was interesting and not something that she had seen happen before.

He allowed a little smirk at her boast. "And you lived to tell everyone about the encounter. Perhaps the tales of the Power Rangers are just exaggerated stories. They didn't sound so tough."

“He was strong but so am I.” The woman assured. “He only got away as I was so surprised at what my staff did to him.”

"You wounded the Ranger. A surprise?" Kayge asked, intrigued. "I have seen you cut through armies with ease, Luna."

"Not like that." She said wishing he would get the point she was trying to make. "My staff sliced through the Orange ranger like they had no suit just like it did with the pink ranger. It had never done that with rangers before and we have met many over the years." She whispered looking up at him as if she was sharing a secrete.

"Why question a good thing?" Kayge asked, drawing her close. "The Emperor should insist that you finish the task of destroying them."

“Because it is unusual.” She replied surprised that he pulled her close so publicly even if it was just then in the destroyed juice bar. “It does not sit well with me that it has happened twice now and I have no answers.”

"But you will. In time." He grinned, motioning to the ruins around them. "We have lots of time. And the Rangers will come to us, given what we have done to their home. It is inevitable that we will meet them in battle again."

“Perhaps.” Luna looked around and shrugged. She agreed but she was not a patient person at all. Had he not learned that after the last few years?

He touched her chin again, diverting her eyes back to his. "It pleases me that you enjoy battle as much as I do. As it does our emperor, I have no doubt." He smiled. "Come. We'll begin the hunt for more Rangers for you to destroy."

The woman frowned as he brought her back to him. “I told you I wanted to rest.” Luna reminded him looking around. “Let’s find somewhere ridiculously posh and just rest for a few hours. We can think of it as Aurelius Prime.”

Kayge smiled as he recalled the many memories they had made there. It would be a shame to miss out on more battle, but there would be time for that later. He kissed her cheek gently. "As you wish."

Luna held out her hand to him. She had the magic after all to teleport them wherever she wishes. “I do. I actually just want to lie down.” It was unusual but not unheard of in her.

"Then rest," he nodded sharply. "And dream of more victories against the Power Rangers."
