Boss at the Bedside

1,280 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: The Invasion
Location: Medbay, Earth Patrol Base 1
Timeline: 0800 Hours, 15th November 2050

Damien walked through the doorway to Kilena's room and froze. He'd hoped to be alone when he visited, maybe a nurse or a doctor there checking on the patient but no one official. Unfortunately, no such luck. Instead, standing by the stasis tube holding Kilena was the Commander of Earth Patrol base, head of all GPF operations on the planet. Damien grimaced as he stepped alongside the Commander.

"What brings you out here, sir?" Damien asked "Surely, checking on a cadet isn't your responsibility? I would have thought that falls under the purview of the Commandant?"

"Well, when something so extremely illegal happens I am normally called." The man answered. "You and your friends are illegal.... two were easy to hide, but four is slightly harder." He was not even going to mention the Orange Ranger, that was not his problem. He was not an officer here as far as he could tell.

"I mean, last I checked, people aren't illegal." Damien quipped "Also, don't know if you've heard but I don't have loads of friends. Apparently, I'm kind of a dick."

"Do not test me red ranger." He hissed back turning to look at him. "Rangers are illegal and we both know that."

"Oh, we're talking about that illegal thing about me and... Well, friends is still kind of an overstatement..." Damien said, quickly continuing "But I get your point. What gave it away? Just so I know for future reference on the whole secret identity thing, which I feel I need to know, especially if you're about to try to arrest me."

"Do you want to spend the next fifty years in the maximum-security whilst the universe burns around you or are you going to listen?" The Commander demanded.

"I mean, I could get a lot of reading done, and I'd get crazy jacked, but let's go with the listen option." Damien replied "How'd you figure it out?"

"It was hard not to pin together the clues together as you are not exactly subtle McGinnis." The man commented with a shake of his head as he glanced at the tube. "You would have been better at demorphing on KO-35 and returning that way."

"... Absolutely none of us considered that." Damien lied "No sirree, no one suggested that even once..."

“Obviously.” The man replied dryly as his attention turned fully to the pink ranger. He needed to find a way to create them as a team but that could come together once they were all healed.

"Is she alright?" Damien asked, folding his arms across his chest, before noting the red hoodie he must have left earlier "Want to throw me my jacket?"

The Commander tossed the man his jacket before he moved over to the stasis tube that held Kilena. "She's doing better but it was touch and go. What happened?" The man asked.

"Well, there were drones, psycho bitch and that big blue guy," Damien asked "We fought, I tried to make sure the civilians didn't get killed and we got our collective asses handed to us for our trouble."

The Commander found himself counting to five before he turned back around to look at the man. "Why did you come to anyone when it started?" He asked the burning question that was within him. Why hadn't any of them come to him when it had started.

"We don't all have the luxury of having a Ranger division in the chain of command." Damien noted "If we said anything, you'd order us not to operate as Rangers and frankly, we're the best equipped to fight the bad guys. Plus, even if you'd said yes, well, no offence, but It's Morphin time sounds better than SPD Emergency..."

The Commander looked at him. "Are you finished?" He wondered frankly not impressed by the attitude.

"Oh, but I prefer the old SPD suits. Especially the one with a Cape." Damien said "Now it's your turn. Sir."

"You nearly got yourself and your teammate killed. It was only because...." He paused. "That we got to you in time due to a homing beacon that we saved her. She had flatlined and the Morphin energy in her couldn't bring her back."

"You're joking?" Damien asked, stunned "What's her status now? How's the blue boy? And the girl in the green?"

"The Blue and Green Rangers are fine as well. They were able to tell us the majority of the story but not the important bits." The Commander said handing over a tablet for the man to see her status. How two had become four rangers was beyond him but it was what it was and he had to find a way to keep their existence under wraps. "She was stabbed with a material that hasn't been seen or heard of in over 10'000 years. It melted through her ranger's uniform like it was butter."

"But that's not possible." Damien said "I know it looks like funky spandex, but it's armour, isn't it? You can't just get through that."

"I know that. I need to know more about the woman you faced." The Commander said firmly. "We need to know what we are facing."

"Humanoid, blonde, kinda hot." Damien said, "In a dominatrix kinda way."

The Commander looked at the man for a moment before glancing at the nurse. "Let me know when he is off whatever you've pumped him full of in stasis." He said shortly before the nurse winced.

"He doesn't have anything left in his system, sir... This is normally what the red ranger is like." He said making the man glanced back at the red ranger not impressed at all.

"Okay hotshot... let me ask you a question. What kind of weapon leaves your teammate dead on the floor?" The man asked simply.

"One with a sharp point." Damien noted "Look, I wasn't really looking. I was kind of busy with the bad guys."

"When Miss Keitheron wakes up I want to know." The Commander said trying to hide his disgust at this boy having the red ranger abilities.

"Agreed. In the meantime, I'm going hunting. Get some payback." Damien said, twisting his left wrist, causing his Morpher to appear in a flash of red energy before his crystal appeared in his right hand "If you don't mind?"

"I do mind." The Academy Commander said simply. "As soon as I've spoken to Miss Keitheron all four of you are going to Australia as more morphing energies have been detected there. If you are going to be rangers you can hunt down the crystals before they fall into the wrong hands."

"Okay, and what if there are giant bad guys?" Damien asked, "Ooh, do we still have those black jets that turn into a robot and a giant gun?"

"No. You know as well as I do that you are illegal. We just have to hope and pray we find the Zords connected to these abilities before your new friends." The Commander said thinking he had a lot of calls to make and favours to call in.

"Any energy signatures that could be those?" Damien questioned, folding his arms "Oh, and do we get team jackets? I think the red lion thing from my helmet would look awesome on a jacket."

The Commander just looked him over and headed to the door. He didn't have time for the man at all, didn't want to get involved when he had bigger concerns than uniforms. He needed to find out who the hell the woman was with the weapon, who the red ranger was rather than who the orange ranger was and where the hell the zords were.
