Mission: Earth
Location: GPF Garage
Timeline: 1800, May 4th, 2051

Kilena loved being on solo city watch. It just meant that she drove around the city and learned exactly what it was to be an officer, and even as she drove into the parking garage, she felt sad that her shift was nearly over. She jumped out of the car and started the checklist of handing the vehicle back to the support staff.

“Is that coffee for me?” She wondered seeing the person waiting for her report.

“Afraid not.” Michael Kensington replied before smirking “Just pulling your leg. Here, take it. The machine has been on the fritz today anyway. Spitting out nothing but decaf. How was the patrol?”

“Decaf is perfect. Thank you.” She took the coffee with a wink at the man. She took the mug in her hand and savoured the warmth. “It was okay. There was a situation over by the north quadrant health centre with some protesters and a supermarket thief, but it was all solved.”

“Even so, I’ll have a member of my team keep an eye on the health centre. Regulation and all that.” Michael nodded, “Thanks for the heads up.”

“I ain’t McGinnis. I share, but not much really happened. Those were the highlights, other than getting ice cream when I did a walk around the family park.” She teased. She always enjoyed handover with Michael as he was easy-going and exactly who she needed to speak to reflect properly after a shift. It was a shame that he had been shifted from their team to hide their identities as he would have fit in nicely.

“The cart by the rock pool?” He asked “Their banana and toffee biscuit flavour is an underrated gem.”

“That is what I had. Fraser introduced me to it.” She said, smiling. “You have good taste.” She assured. “When are you back on days so you can enjoy it?” She asked following him as he checked over the truck. She knew there was nothing changed, so it was formalities.

“As soon as we graduate.” He replied, shaking his head “Then I'm due to ship off world. So I'll need a new ice cream spot.”“

“Where are you heading?” Kilena wondered not realising the transfer papers had come in for their class yet. She had always hoped to go home but now she could not imagine being anywhere other than Earth.

“Edinoi first.” He groaned, “Then, once I finish on the desert planet, I’m off to Mirinoi… At least that one has better weather.”

“Edinoi is not so bad. Some parts of it are lovely.” She reminded. The GPF and other agencies had spent a long time working on trying to change the planet back to something more livable.

“True. The venture domes are lovely.” He nodded “Unfortunately, the GPF base is way out in the wastes.”

“I am sure you will get by Michael. You survived here. I get to stay here with McGinnis.” She teased as she took a sip of the drink and sighed a little. McGinnis was one of the best friends but it did not mean she could not mock him and keep up the fake story that they all despised each other to avoid suspicion.

“He's not a bad egg. Just an annoying one.” Michael laughed “How can you dislike him that much after spending… Actually, yeah. After rooming with him for first year, I wanted to kill the guy…”

“I want to scramble that egg.” Kilena giggled. “You roomed together huh? How did that go?” She wondered still going through her checks as she connected the car for a fast charge.

“As I say, I wanted to kill him by the end of the year.” Michael nodded “He's a good egg, and a nice guy, but only tolerable in very small doses.”

“So what you are saying is trying to not scramble as you like him deep down.” She laughed a little as she sighed. “Supposed I better get going with my evening.” She knew her husband would not be back for awhile so maybe she could grab a snack on way back and have a bath.

“Yeah, and I’d better get distributing orders.” Michael replied with a smile and a nod “Thanks for the Health Centre tip.”

“Anytime Michael.” She smiled a little watching him leave. It always felt strange to her that the man was not a ranger and had not bonded with any of the crystals. Sometimes the universe did not make sense.
